Jessi Stegall and Ilya Vidrin, who collaborate as The Partnering Lab, commissioned director-choreographer Raja Feather Kelly and cinematographer Sue Murad to collaborate on a new art film, “tethered.”  Join us for a screening of this new process-based, short dance film, followed by a conversation with the creative team about their process for creating this artwork at the ArtLab.

Part dance theatre and part documentary, the film’s unifying theme is the tethering of different dimensions within a partnership. The creative endeavor involves a recursive, interdisciplinary journey between film and choreography that highlights the relationship between rehearsing performing, process product, direction editing. Rather than storyboarding in advance, the performers Ilya Vidrin (’15) and Jessi Stegall (’22) pursue a responsive-emergent method, while Sue (cinematography) and Raja (director) respond to what manifests in the moment.

Dr. Ilya Vidrin is a Visiting Scholar at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard in Spring, 2024.

“tethered” was filmed at ArtLab and is associated with Ilya Vidrin‘s 2020 ArtLab residency.
