Liz Lerman is a choreographer, performer, writer, educator, and recipient of honors, including being selected as a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow, a 2002 MacArthur “Genius Grant,” and a 2017 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. Throughout her career, Lerman has expanded where dance lives in our society. She has cultivated generations of dance makers focused on dance as an agent for social change through community engagement. She has demonstrated how dance is utilized to communicate complex issues in our world.
The public event Messy beginnings: making ideas public is a work in progress. Liz Lerman will engage the audience while sharing creative research about her new project, My Body is a Library. The themes of this new public artwork include how we create categories, unpack nomenclature, and uphold oral histories & traditions. Liz will be joined at ArtLab by creative collaborators Will Bond, Paloma McGregor, Ruby Morales, Elisa Radcliffe, Angelina Ramirez, and Darron L West.
Liz Lerman founded Dance Exchange in 1976 and led it until 2011. She and her dance company were an artist in residence at ArtLab in 2019, developing the performance Wicked Bodies with Harvard Law School Professor Martha Minow.
Liz Lerman and company are 2024 ArtLab Artists in Residence.
This public event is part of ArtsThursdays, a university-wide initiative supported by the Harvard University Committee on the Arts (HUCA.)
