ARTIST Q&A
Born: San Juan Capistrano, CA
Currently lives: Somerville, MA
Title of artwork: “Untitled (NE)“
What’s it about? It’s part of a larger project investigating the sense of unease I feel when defining ‘home’ and loosely structured around some trajectories of long dead relatives here on the east coast. It’s very much still taking shape.
Where else can we find your work? I have a piece on the Curated Fridge here in Somerville, though it may no longer be up by mid-summer.
Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? There’s a mural along the bike path outside of Davis Square that I really enjoy. It has all the neighborhoods in Somerville, and was surprisingly helpful in orienting me when I first arrived here. When I first moved to Boston, I lived in lower Allston but rarely made it past Harvard Square where I was working. Somerville felt miles away!
Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow? I’ve only recently gotten back into analog photography, and wanted to find some space in that community but was absolutely terrified. John S. (@jamaicaplainandtall), who I’d encountered on social media, was organizing photo walks in JP and I just decided to go. It was a huge leap for me meeting new groups of people, and I’m so grateful they created the opportunity. They also are willing to experiment and try different modes, and it’s a wonderful reminder that making doesn’t have to be such a rigid process.
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Driving and walking anywhere new with a camera.
What was your top song for 2024? Slide 2 Me by Drug Church
Favorite food spot in in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? When I was living there, Deep Ellum.
What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? I enjoy, rather than abhor, looking inwards.
What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? Don’t be so timid. The world is large and most people are kind.
What is your dream project to work on? A year off to drive around the US with no itinerary.
