ANDY LI

Andy Li is a Boston based artist who focuses on the power of now. His work is a reflection of the day to day mundane and the moments of greatness that we perceive in an instant. He is a Mass. Art graduate with a BFA in Media and Performance Art with a focus in Film/Video and 3D Sculpture with a focus in Fibers and Soft Sculpture. These two mediums have provided him with an understanding for the value of time and patience. Some days you will see him hunched over a single thread for hours on end, and other days you will see him running back and forth with three different cameras trying to find the best light. A believer in the suggestive nature of positivity, more often you will see him encouraging those around him to keep failing in order to keep getting better. Always trying to adapt and evolve, his work and his personal attitude is the visual exploration to the saying, “You can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs.”

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Boston

Currently lives: Cambridge

Title of artwork: “The Eventually“

What’s it about? This piece came about as a form of meditation acknowledgement. We exist in a sea of emotions and once you realize you can’t control everything you learn to just ride the wave. Like things might suck now, but honestly they’ll probably suck less later, so keep doing you!

Where else can we find your work? You can catch my work in a few places across the city! I have some goodies hanging out over at Great Goods (@shopgreatgoods) in the Seaport, Project Paulie (@_projectpaulie_) in the North End, and The Captain’s Daughters (@thecaptainsdaughters) in Provincetown!

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? There are a lot of great pieces in the city right now, but my favorite piece is Zhidong Zhang’s new piece on The Rose Kennedy Greenway, Far Away, From Home.

Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow? All of them! The scene has grown so much and I find myself looking at new work almost every day.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?One of my favorite ways to spend a day off is to bike around town with my partner looking for nice spot to grab some drinks and food, playing some pool, and then heading home to cook a solid dinner.

What was your top song for 2023? Cool Cat by Queen got me home on a lot of late night bike rides

Favorite food spot in in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? I’m a sucker for the empanadas and the wines over at Super Bien!

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? I learned that if I’m nervous about a project then I should totally do it. That uneasy feeling means that I am trying something new, forcing myself out of my comfort zone, and really allowing myself to grow. Most of the time things turn out great! And if it doesn’t? Who cares, I am understanding my skills a little bit better than before.

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? If you have an idea, just do it! Also, start a mailing list.

What is your dream project to work on? I often find myself daydreaming about making a sky banner for a plane to tow around the city
